Recycling equipment is underutilized, only 8% of plastics are recycled in Chile every year

According to a report compiled by the South American Overseas Chinese News Network, a recent survey conducted by the Chilean Plastics Industry Association (Asipla) shows that Chile currently recycles approximately 83,679 tons of plastic each year, which only accounts for its total consumption of plastic (about 99 10,000 tons).

The Chilean "Time Observer" reported that the report pointed out that the current utilization rate of plastic grinding equipment in Chile is only 48%, and that of granulating equipment is 57%, which are the two main production processes for plastic recycling.

According to survey data, only 17% (14,281 tons) of plastic recycled in Chile each year are household waste plastics, of which 52.2% are polyethylene terephthalate plastics (PET plastics, mainly plastic bottles). In addition, the plastic recycling equipment currently owned by Chile mainly targets polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate, which is in line with the global development trend of the industry.

Asipla general manager Magdalena Balcells (Magdalena Balcells) said that the results of the study showed a development opportunity. "Part of the study introduced Chile's unused idle capacity in plastic recycling. If plastic grinding and granulation equipment can be fully utilized, the amount of plastic recycling in the next few years can increase by at least 65,000 tons per year." He said.
